Author Jill Rigby addresses families at bi-monthly CCS Parent Academy meeting
Founder of Manners of the Heart and author of Raising Respectful Children in a Disrespectful World, Jill Rigby addressed a group of parents, grandparents and children at this week's CCS Parent Academy gathering. In her presentation, Jill spoke passionately about the difference between self-esteem and self-respect. Rigby asserts that for children to grow into joyful, humble, well-mannered adults who are able to persevere through challenging situations, they need to have respect for themselves rather than esteeming themselves - thinking they are the most important. Further, Rigby asked the audience to consider a mirror. She went on to say that as we look in the mirror, we are unable to see beyond the mirror, and those on the other side of the mirror cannot see us. However, if we consider a window instead, we can see through the window, yet see ourselves at the same time. When our children are able to see others first and then themselves, we are helping them to develop self-respect. In addition to hearing Rigby's remarks, families in attendance were given a free copy of her book Raising Respectful Children in a Disrespectful World. Books were donated by the Albemarle Corporation
